English champions Manchester City's worst fears of once again landing themselves into a group of death at the Champions League group stage came true when they were pitted against Spanish champions Real Madrid, Dutch champions Ajax and German champions Borussia Dortmund.
Champions League draw were announced on Thursday in Monaco, and City faces a grim prospect of bowing out of the group stages of Europe's elite competition just like last year.
City couldn't go past the group stage in the Champions League last year after coming third in a group, which boasted of European stalwart Bayern Munich, Italian giants Napoli and Spanish team Villareal.
However, City is now considered a force in Europe, as confirmed by Real director Emilio Butragueno.
"City are a very strong team after an enormous investment in recent years and they will be a rival of the highest level," The Telegraph quoted Butragueno, as saying.
Despite being a part of the toughest group in the Champions League, City is still favourites to reach the knock out stage along side Madrid.
