I Collected Money Not Bribe —Farouk Lawan

Disgraced member of the House of Representative and suspended chairman of the House Ad-Hoc Committee on the Monitoring of Subsidy Regime, Hon. Farouk Lawan, has began defending himself in the ongoing investigation into a $620,000 bribery allegation levelled against him by business mogul Mr. Femi Otedola, Chairman, Zenon Oil and Gas.
Lawan, who was interrogated behind closed doors by the House of Representatives Committee on Ethics and Privileges, which began investigation into the allegation yesterday, said what he collected was money and not a bribe.
Restating his earlier statement to the media, Lawan said he collected $500,000 from Otedola not as a bribe but as exhibit that he planned to use as evidence of the attempt by the oil marketer to influence the report of the subsidy probe.
Otedola, in his account of the transaction between the duo, had claimed that Lawan made repeated demands of him for money to stop the ad hoc committee from indicting his company, adding that he had to bring in security agents who advised him to play along with the lawmaker in a bid to nail him.
The security agents, he added, provided the serialised dollar bills that were given to Lawan, who collected the money without knowing that he was being recorded.
A source told THISDAY that Lawan appeared confident throughout his session with the Ethics Committee, but he was rather evasive when asked about the whereabouts of the money he admitted to have collected.
Unlike in the past when he claimed that the money was with the Chairman, House Committee on Drugs, Narcotics and Financial Crimes, Hon. Adams Jagaba, Lawan said the security agencies would establish the whereabouts of the money during their investigations.
On his part, Jagaba in different letters to the House Speaker, Hon. Aminu Tambuwal and acting Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar, had denied Lawan’s claim.
THISDAY checks showed that besides his oral testimony, Lawan also tendered documents said to contain call logs obtained from a telecommunication service provider to substantiate his claim that Otedola initiated the transaction and not him.
It was learnt that the committee might recall Lawan to give further clarifications on his testimony as the investigation progresses.
Earlier, Lawan, who had arrived at the venue of the committee at 1.05 pm, expressed surprise at the heavy media presence. He expressed pleasantries with his colleagues and reporters before taking his seat.
Chairman, House Committee on Ethics and Privileges, Hon. Gambo Dan-Musa, gave a synopsis of the case under investigation and shortly after, ordered reporters to excuse the committee to enable it interrogate Lawan in camera.
Dan-Musa said the committee’s mission was to establish the facts of the bribery allegation and after a series of meetings, it decided to invite Lawan, Otedola and other stakeholders involved in the matter to appear before it at different times.
“The committee is set to carry out its assignment with a very high sense of commitment. We shall strive to be fair and just to all parties involved. It is our belief that at the end of the day, our report will meet the expectations of the House and indeed that of the Nigerian public,” Dan-Musa said.
Chairman, House Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Hon. Zakari Mohammed, who addressed reporters later, said the decision to conduct the investigation secretly was to create a conducive atmosphere for Lawan and others to give their testimonies freely and without distraction.
“You know that it is an investigative hearing and we want to avoid a situation where his (Lawan) presentation would bungle certain people’s submissions.
“Of course, the police are doing their own investigations and they are doing that in camera. So we believe that this also should be done in camera to at least give everybody some protection and the freedom to say all that he or she knows.
“If you are sure there are cameras, there might be certain things witnesses might want to hide. So it is not as if we are trying to hide anything but we want to ensure that we do a thorough job of this investigation,” Mohammed said.

Mario Balotelli took off his jersey after his second goal, which drew a yellow card

WARSAW, Poland (AP) -- Mario Balotelli flexed his muscles in more ways than one.
The 21-year-old Italy striker quieted his multitude of critics by delivering Italy to an unexpected spot in the European Championship final. Having been severely criticized for failing to take advantage of his opportunities earlier in the tournament, Balotelli scored twice in the first half Thursday to give Italy a 2-1 win over Germany.
After his second goal, Balotelli stripped off his jersey and flexed his muscles in a defiant pose - even if that meant an automatic yellow card. For someone whose behavior often treads on the verge of craziness, it was an emblematic moment.
"This is the greatest night of my life, but I hope Sunday is going to be even better,'' Balotelli said, looking ahead to the final against defending champion Spain. "In the opening matches I had a lot of chances, and I wasn't able to finish them. But In football you also need luck.''
In the 20th minute, Balotelli had no trouble getting past Holger Badstuber to head in a pinpoint cross from Antonio Cassano. Then in the 36th, he received the ball behind the defense and blasted a long shot into the top right corner.
With three goals, Balotelli moved level with four other players for the tournament scoring lead. After the match, Italy coach Cesare Prandelli was asked if this was the best match of Balotelli's career.
"Balotelli's career has just started,'' Prandelli said.
Meanwhile, Germany extended its winless streak against Italy in major tournaments to eight matches. The Germans failed to trouble Italy for much of the match, although Mesut Oezil scored a consolation penalty in injury time after Federico Balzaretti was whistled for a handball.
Germany had entered the game on a world record 15-match winning streak in competitive matches.
"It's a very bitter defeat,'' Germany captain Philipp Lahm said. "We tried everything in the second half but our goal came too late. We have so much potential in our team but if we cannot give the right performance at the right time or are not clever enough, then we lose such a game.''
The final in Kiev, Ukraine, will be a rematch of Italy and Spain's 1-1 draw that opened Group C.
"We showed we're on Spain's level and that's where we started this run,'' Italy midfielder Claudio Marchisio said. "It's no longer a question of fear. Now we've got to pull out everything we still have inside ourselves.''
While Italy has won four World Cups, it's only European Championship title came in 1968. Like when they won the 1982 and 2006 World Cups, the Azzurri have managed to maintain their focus despite a match-fixing and betting scandal at home.

On a pleasant evening at the National Stadium Warsaw, Cassano set up the opening goal by befuddling Germany defenders Mats Hummels and Jerome Boateng to lift the ball in Balotelli's direction.

Buffon made another impressive save in the 62nd, leaping to push a free kick from Reus off the bar.
While Italy largely sat back and protected its lead in the second half, the Azzurri did produce some dangerous counterattacks. Marchisio shot just wide in the 67th and 75th and substitute Antonio Di Natale missed another chance in the 82nd.
Di Natale came on in the 70th after Balotelli went down with a cramp to his left leg.
White-clad German fans greatly outnumbered Italian supporters, unveiling a huge banner before kickoff that featured a giant "G'' for Germany. However, most of the stadium was filled with Polish fans who supported Italy.
They had plenty to cheer about.
"We're living a dream along with millions of Italians,'' Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini said. "We're going to enjoy this victory a little longer, then we'll think about Sunday, because we want to continue dreaming.''

A 45-year-old woman has caught her husband having sex with their only daughter of 15 years. The man, 51, resides with his wife and their daughter at Ayobo, Ipaja, Lagos, southwest Nigeria.
The girl's mother who is a trader at Oshodi, on the fateful day, went to Festac Town, but had to return home because she was not feeling well. According to the source, the woman, on getting home, met her husband and their daughter on their matrimonial bed having sex and the man sucking her breasts.

The woman was said to have raised an alarm which attracted neighbors and passersby.
The woman was heard saying: "Must I be monitoring my daughter or be afraid when my daughter is with her father? One of our tenants once told me that the closeness of my husband and our daughter was suspicious. FEARS associated with the activities of the

Cesc winning penalty sends Spain into final (0-0, 4-2)

Spain finished their semi final against Portugal with Piqué, Busquets, Fabregas, Iniesta and Pedro on the pitch, after Xavi had come off late in the second half. Iniesta was the second penalty taker for Spain, putting them one up after Xabi Alonso’s effort had been saved, and Piqué, Ramos and finally Fabregas then stepped forward to give Del Bosque’s team the 4-2 win and a ticket to Sunday’s final against Germany or Italy.

Portugal made their tactics clear from the off, pressurising Spain high up the pitch and cutting off the supply lines to the creative talents of Xavi, Busquets and Iniesta and Del Bosque’s team could only manage a couple of half decent chances from Iniesta and Arbeola. Portugal themselves also found it hard to make openings, with Ronaldo their main attacking threat.

Arsenal faces Eagles in Abuja, as NFF denies Saintfiet

Tickets go on sale next week

ENGLISH Premiership club, Arsenal, is billed to meet the Super Eagles in a friendly game in Abuja on August 5, the organiser of the Gunners tour of Africa has announced.
It is the first time the North London club will be coming to Nigeria, and the organiser says that tickets will go on sale in outlets across the country on July 4. According to tour promoter, DanJan Sports, the agreement for the game has been finalised with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).
“We are delighted to announce that Arsenal Football Club will face the Super Eagles of Nigeria in Abuja,” David Omigie of DanJan Sports said. “The NFF has agreed that the country will present a strong side as coach Stephen Keshi continues his development process.
“The Arsenal manager (Arsene Wenger) will also use this game to showcase his full squad for the 2012/2013 football season.”
The London club traditionally hosts an annual pre-season tournament at the Emirates Stadium but opted to postpone the event for a year because of the 2012 London Olympics. The visit to Nigeria will conclude Arsenal’s pre-season tour after playing in both China and Malaysia in July.
Arsenal said in its official website: “The club last visited Africa during a tour of South Africa in July 1993, and is returning as a result of the fantastic support which exists for the team, not only in Nigeria, but across the entire continent.”
DanJan Sports also revealed that tickets for the upcoming friendly match with Nigeria would go on sale from July 4 across outlets to be announced soon. In July 2008, Danjan Sports brought two other English clubs, Manchester United and Portsmouth, to Abuja for a pre-season friendly. As well as the match between the two, Portsmouth also played against Nigeria Premier League side, Kano Pillars.
Meanwhile, the NFF says it has not signed any contract with Belgian coach, Tom Saintfiet, as the country’s technical director. The appointment of Saintfiet has generated a lot of reactions after the Minister of Sports, Bolaji Abdullahi, asked the federation to jettison the idea of employing the Belgian.
NFF Media Committee Chairman, Emeka Inyama, told MTNFootball.com: “We don’t have any contractual agreement with Saintfiet. We only announced that we have resolved to give him the job. No papers were signed, no contract was entered into and as such we have no reason to say we are sacking him.”
On March 28, Inyama addressed a world press conference announcing that the 38-year old Belgian had been handed a four-year contract with a $20,000 monthly salary. However, the NFF has failed in its effort to secure a work permit for the former coach of Ethiopia and Namibia. It is now believed that the job would be given to a Nigerian.

Chelsea Football Club can confirm Didier Drogba will be leaving the club when his contract expires at the end of June.
Didier has spent eight years at Chelsea, and everyone at the club would like to thank him for his service and wish him luck and continued success for the future.
Chelsea Chief Executive Ron Gourlay said: 'Didier is undoubtedly a Chelsea legend and will always be part of the Chelsea family. He is certainly leaving on a high after Saturday night but he feels the time is right for a new challenge.
'Of course Didier has contributed so much to all of Chelsea's recent successes. He has been a consummate professional during his entire time here and as one of the natural leaders in our squad he has been an inspiration to a lot of our younger players.
'We have known for some time that this outcome was likely but Didier and the club only made a final decision on that in the last couple of days, because for obvious reasons neither Didier nor the club wanted to distract focus away from the Champions League Final.
                                               
'The talks were amicable all the way through and we wish him all the best for the future. He is welcome back to Stamford Bridge at any time - either as a player or as a guest of ours.'
Didier leaves Chelsea having scored 157 goals in 341 appearances. He is the club's fourth all-time highest scorer, his 34 goals in European competition is a Chelsea record by 10 goals and his nine strikes in nine cup finals has contributed immensely to the most successful period in the club's history.
He won three Premier League titles, four FA Cups, two Carling Cups and now, in the most dramatic and glorious of circumstances, the Champions League. He has been named Chelsea's Player of the Year and Players' Player of the Year and won the Premier League Golden Boot twice.
The 34-year-old said: 'I wanted to put an end to all the speculation and confirm that I am leaving Chelsea. It has been a very difficult decision for me to make and I am very proud of what we have achieved but the time is right for a new challenge for me.
'As a team we have accomplished so much and have won every single trophy possible. Saturday was a very special moment for everyone at the club and for all the fans, and I am very proud to have played my part in bringing many trophies to this club, which has been my home for the last eight years.

All Expatriate Pilots and Crew of Dana Air Leave Nigeria

 All the expatriate pilots and co-pilots working for the embattled Dana Air have all left Nigeria. 6 Captains, 13 co-pilots and 3 female pilots tendered their resignation to the Airline company and have relocated to their respective countries. The fatal June 3rd crash was said to have affected their desire to continue working in Nigeria.

The death of Captain Peter Waxton, the pilot who flew the crashed plane, also affected the other expatriates. Captain Waxton was not only the most experienced pilot, he was also the highest paid amongst the pilots of Dana Air.

The co-pilot of the Dana crash Indian Mike Mehandra had a six year old son and a pregnant wife due to deliver in August.

 Isabella met a young man, Mathew then a franchise holder of the Miss Global International pageant in Jamaica in 2009,and  on account of her connection with money bags, Isabella was hand-picked to represent Nigeria when she agreed to sponsor herself for the international pageant in Jamaica where she performed woefully.

Fela Anikulapo Kuti's Residence to be Turned to a Museum

The one-storey building Fela built and lived until his death on August 2, 1997, will be turned to a museum.
The house, located at 18, Gbemisola Str., Ikeja, which is also the late Afro beat legend's final resting ground, will be called Kalakuta Museum and is scheduled for opening in October this year during the annual Felabrations event.

The Kalakuta Museum when completed  is expected to have an exhibition area, 5-room boutique hotel, a souvenir shop, a bar and stage and a roof-top restaurant among other things.

 

The home is being turned to a museum according to those behind it to preserve the history of an illustrious son of Africa, promote tourism, acquire, display and preserve artifacts, documents and records of the man referenced as well as those of his contemporaries of African ancestry.

Beyonce and Jay Z vacationed in Croatia last year when Beyonce was pregnant. While there, Beyonce was filmed in front of a tree in Hvar, an Island in the Adriatic Sea. In the video, which she later posted on her Tumblr, Beyonce said: "I think it's Blue Ivy, which would be appropriate"

Nigerian breaks academic record at John Hopkins University

 

A 22 year old Nigerian has emerged the best graduating student of John Hopkins University in the US. Emmanuel Ohuabunwa from Arochukwu, Abia State obtained a Grade Point Average of 3.98 out of a possible 4.0 to earn a degree in Neurosciences. Emmanuel is the first black man to make this Grade in the university.

For his efforts, he has won a scholarship to Yale University to pursue a degree in medicine. He has also been inducted into Phi Beta Kappa Society, a prestigious honour group that features membership of 17 US Presidents, 37 US Supreme Court Justices, and 136 Nobel Prize winners. (Punch)

Woman Forced To Sit Next To Dead Passenger Aboard Kenya Airways

A Swedish woman was given no choice but to sit next to a corpse for much of a 10-hour flight to Kenya, New York daily reported yesterday.

Lena Pettersson a reporter for 'Radio Sweden', revealed that her fellow passenger, a man in his 30s, appeared to be sick when she boarded a Dar es Salaam-bound Kenya Airways flight during a stopover at Amsterdam's Schiphol airport "He was sweating and had seizures. Air hostesses were there all along, but the plane took off anyway."

The man reportedly died a few hours into the overnight flight, despite efforts by the crew and passengers to revive him.


Pettersson, who was headed to Tanzania on vacation, was compelled to sit across the aisle from the corpse for the rest of the trip.

"I asked to move, but they said there were no other places," she said. However, after returning home, Pettersson emailed the airline, which eventually apologized and refunded about half the cost of her 1,400 dollars ticket. "This feels much better. It is reasonable," Pettersson added.

NNPC Gets New Management

The NNPC has a new Group Managing Director and a rejigged management team in furtherance of government’s efforts to turn around the oil and gas sector of the economy, according to a statement from the Presidency.

Engineer Andrew Yakubu has emerged Group Managing Director thus succeeding erstwhile GMD, Mr. Austen Oniwon, who has been retired.

The statement in full reads:
 
“PRESIDENT JONATHAN APPROVES RE-COMPOSITION OF NNPC MANAGEMENT TEAM

To further strengthen the ongoing reforms and transformation of Nigeria’s Petroleum sector, and in furtherance of efforts to achieve greater transparency and accountability in government, President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has approved the re-composition of the executive management team of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) as follows:

1.      Engr. Andrew Yakubu - Group Managing Director

2.      Mr. Bernard O.N. Otti - Group Executive Director (Finance and Accounts)

3.      Engr. Abiye Membere - Group Executive Director (Exploration and Production)

Yakubu is an indigene of Kaduna State and a Fellow of the Nigerian Society of Engineers.

President Jonathan has also approved the appointment of Engr. Victor Briggs as the new Managing Director of the Nigerian Petroleum Development Company (NPDC).

The incumbent Group Managing Director, Engr. Austen Oniwon, and Mr. Michael Arokodare (outgoing Group Executive Director (Finance and Accounts), Mr. Philip Chukwu, outgoing Group Executive Director (Refineries & Petrochemicals), and Engr. Billy Agha, outgoing Group Executive Director (Engineering & Technology) are to proceed on retirement.

President Jonathan commends the outgoing directors for their service to the nation and urges the new management team to be fully committed to rapidly implementing the critical interventions needed to positively transform Nigeria’s petroleum industry.”

50 Cent Released From Hospital After Car Accident G-Unit CEO was taken to a Queens, New York, hospital after his SUV was rear-ended Tuesday morning.

A month after 50 Cent was hospitalized with a blockage in his small intestine, Fif was back in the hospital Tuesday morning (June 26), this time after a car accident. He has since been released and is back on the mend.
"Curtis '50 Cent' Jackson was involved in a car accident in New York early Tuesday morning. He was taken to New York Hospital Queens where he was treated for minor neck and back injuries," said a spokesperson for the rapper in a statement given to MTV News. "He was released this morning and is doing fine."
 
The rapper's website Thisis50 broke the story early Tuesday morning, though the details are thin. The site reported that the Get Rich or Die Tryin' MC's bullet-proof SUV almost flipped over after it was rear-ended by a Mack truck while driving on the Long Island Expressway in New York City.
The site published multiple pictures of 50 on a stretcher with a neck brace. There are also pictures of 50's mangled SUV as well as photos of the truck that is said to have caused the accident.
50 famously survived a 2000 attack in which he was shot nine times and in 2003 dropped his classic major-label debut Get Rich or Die Tryin'. Fif has since built himself as one of rap's biggest draws and smartest business minds, crafting lucrative deals in music and merchandising. Queen's generous gift for William's 30th

It’s the estate where they spent their first Christmas as husband and wife.

So the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge would have been particularly touched by the Queen’s 30th birthday present for her grandson.

She decided to give Prince William and his wife one of the cottages at her beloved Sandringham.
The gift will be made available to the couple later in the year.

A source told the Mail on Sunday: "He (William) is a country boy and loves Norfolk, just like his father and his grandparents.

"It's a lovely, peaceful place and William adores it."

Sandringham has been the private home of four generations of British monarchs since 1862 – the Queen's grandfather King George V described it as "the place I love better than anywhere in the world".

The cottage in a mansions disguise

It is located near King’s Lynn in Norfolk and has been owned by the Queen since her ascension in 1952.

At the centre of the 20,000-acre estate is the main house, an Edwardian mansion where the monarch and the Duke of Edinburgh stay every Christmas with the rest of the royal family.

Sandringham includes 150 properties and it is not known which has been gifted to the Duke and Duchess.

In the past, they have stayed at Wood Farm Cottage – a modest residence set in a secluded part of the estate.

It is often used as an informal weekend retreat by the royals; William and his brother regularly host shooting parties there while Harry would stay at the cottage with his ex Chelsy Davy.

Sarah Ferguson also spent time there following her divorce from Prince Andrew in 1996.

Alongside the cottage, William also received £10 million from his late mother’s estate as he celebrated his 30th last Thursday.

Johnny Depp is set to hand over former lover Vanessa Paradis up to 100 million pounds, in one of the biggest pay-offs involving an unmarried couple.
Depp, 49, who is worth more than 200 million pounds, and French singer and actress Paradis, 39, announced they were splitting on Tuesday after months of denials.
They have been together for 14 years but never tied the knot.
“If the couple had been married, Mr Depp’s wife would be able to simply claim 50 per cent, child support payments and alimony,” top Hollywood lawyer Robert Nachshin told the Sun.
“However, because they are not married this does not apply. The partner would have to file a civil suit and go to court,” he said.
Depp is expected to hand over the huge sum anyway in an attempt to keep the split amicable.
“Litigation is expensive, and could run into extremely high figures. This won’t be a monthly payment plan — he will make a lump sum payment as a settlement,” Nachshin added.
The ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ star, who pulled in around 50 million pounds in 2010 alone, has property around the world.
The couple and their children Jack, ten, and Lily-Rose, 13, had been living in a mansion in Los Angeles. He also has a flat there.
Depp owns a house in the Paris suburbs and an island in The Bahamas. He splashed out on another property in Venice, Italy, this year and is also said to be the secret buyer of a house in the village of Burnham Market, Norfolk.

The family first moved into a home in Plan-de-la-Tour in southern France and Paradis is expected to keep that.
